We believe the Bible to be the written word of God. It is the final authority for all that we believe and do. We are ‘reformed’ in the sense of striving to maintain the truths of the Reformation in the 16th Century. Our source of authority is the Bible alone. Salvation comes to us through Christ alone and is received because of God’s grace and becomes a part of our experience by faith alone.
The Bible Alone
Through his creation God has revealed his eternal power and divine nature, but the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the only source of God’s written revelation. The Bible teaches us all that is necessary for our salvation, faith and life and is the standard by which all Christian behaviour must be measured. Furthermore, the Holy Spirit never speaks independently of or contrary to what is set forth in the Bible. No personal spiritual experience can ever substitute for the Scriptures.
By Christ Alone
Our salvation is accomplished by the sacrificial work of Jesus Christ alone. His sinless life and his death in our place are able to give us peace with God and reconcile us to the Father. The full proclamation of the gospel must include the death of Jesus for his people, his resurrection from the dead and the necessity of a response of repentance and faith on the part of all who would be saved.
By Grace Alone
Salvation from sin and from the eternal punishment of hell is by God’s grace alone. The supernatural work of the Holy Spirit brings us to Christ by releasing us from our slavery to sin and raising us from spiritual death to spiritual life. Our salvation is not in any sense a human work. Human methods, techniques or strategies cannot bring about this regeneration (this new birth).
By Faith Alone
The only way to receive God’s grace is through faith. True faith is a knowledge and conviction that everything God reveals in his Word is true, and a deep rooted assurance, created in us by the Holy Spirit, that our sins have been forgiven on the basis of the death of Jesus on the cross. Salvation cannot rest on any merit or good deeds found in us. Faith is not produced by our sinful human nature but is a gift of God.
To God’s Glory Alone
Our salvation is from God and has been accomplished by him. Therefore we must respond to him with praise and thanks and live for him and his glory. We must live our entire lives in the presence of God, under his authority and for his glory alone.
